Convenience Store of Handmade Felt Products in Manhattan

Artist Lucy Sparrow Opens an Entire Convenience Store of Handmade Felt Products in Manhattan.

If you have a late-night hankering for some felty gefilte fish or a bottle of fermented fabric, be sure to stop by 8 ‘Til Late convenience store, the newest temporary installation by British artist Lucy Sparrow known for her felt recreations of everyday objects. Located in Manhattan at The Standard, High Line, the bodega is filled from floor to ceiling with thousands of objects you might find at a typical corner store from breakfast cereals, a deli counter brimming with meats, frozen foods, and spirits—all made from felt and a bit of paint. And just like a real store, every last thing is for sale.

Over the last few years Sparrow has exhibited her felt objects in galleries and art fairs around the world including Art Basel, Scope Miami, and the New York Affordable Art Fair. 8 ‘Til Late is a companion piece to her 2014 installation in London titled The Corner Shop with a similar concept but with Eurocentric products. We have word that lines stretched around the block the last few days and every object in the store has since sold. While originally scheduled to be open through June 30th, the exhibition is ending early, specifically 10pm tonight. So if you’re nearby, now’s your chance. Maybe?

You can see the finer details of some 400 individual items from 8 ‘Til Late on Sparrow’s website.

Life Inside The “Coffin Cubicles” Of Hong Kong

The photographs highlight the reality of Hong Kong’s housing crisis, where tens of thousands of people live in these Coffin Cubicles.

Photographer Benny Lam has documented the suffocating living conditions in Hong Kong’s subdivided flats, recording the lives of these hidden communities.

These small, wooden boxes of 15 sq ft, are known as ‘coffin cubicles’. Cage homes are minuscule rooms lived in by the poorest people in the city. Over the last 10 years, the number of cage homes made of wire mesh has decreased, but they’ve been replaced by beds sealed with wooden planks. The tenants are different ages and sexes – all unable to afford a small cubicle, which would allow more room to stand up

“I’m still alive and yet I am already surrounded by four coffin planks!” … Hong Kong’s cage home tenants.

The photographs highlight the reality of Hong Kong’s housing crisis, where tens of thousands of people live in these cramped conditions because they can’t afford anything else. All photographs: Benny Lam.

Ikea Recipe Sheets makes cooking easier for everyone

IKEA’s Genius Recipe Sheets Make Cooking Easy For Everyone With A Simple Trick. Watch the video and be amazed.

IKEA’s mission on this Earth is to make everything simple and understandable, which comes in handy for those of us stumbling through life without a clue. While their furniture sometimes misses the mark, a series of recipes they’ve just released makes cooking look easier than Paint By Numbers, and we’re pretty sure we’ll never be able to follow a normal recipe again.

The Canadian branch of the Swedish furniture tycoon teamed up with Toronto-based marketing company Leo Burnett to create Cook This Page, an ingenious set of illustrated recipes which they unveiled at a recent IKEA Canada kitchen event. Each one displays drawings of the ingredients needed, and the prospective chef just has to fill in the blanks. The best part? They’re all printed on parchment paper using food-safe ink, so once everything is in place, the page can be rolled up and tossed in the oven. Seriously, does it get any lower-maintenance than that?

Cook This Page has yet to reach IKEA stores, but the concept is so brilliant that we suspect it might even replace the cookbook in due time! See it for yourself below, and let us know if you would attempt any of these scrumptious delights. (h/t)
